The Danger of Success

Posted on February 13, 2012 by admin

As the sad story of Whitney Houston’s death flooded the news this weekend it made me think.  What would make a mega star, someone who appeared to have it all, a woman who loved music and felt so blessed to have the gift of that amazing voice, sabotage in such an extreme way?  Why would she hide in a fog of drugs and alcohol?  While I can only guess, as I don’t really know her, I imagine it was some of the same beliefs and fears that you and I face when we reach for success.

One of the most common fears people face when experiencing success is the fear of becoming a target.  The truth is when we become leaders or stand out for our accomplishments some people do criticize.  During the height of Whitney’s career she was criticized for being a “goodie-goodie”, too perfect, a diva…  Her every move was followed and talked about.  So yes, success and fame can make you the target. The truth also is that success draws support and  love.  However, your brain naturally focuses on the criticism.  It’s a survival mechanism.  Think back to your last work review.  Your boss can say all sorts of positive things but if he/she mentions one area that needs improvement that’s what you focus on. Right?

The question then is, “How do we work with our brain to not just survive but thrive during success?”  The first step is to watch what we focus on.  By focusing on the fear of being the victim we tend to draw people to us that will attack us.  It’s just how it works.  So the way to avoid this is to begin focusing on people who support us.  Focus on how, with your success you can help others and the feeling of accomplishment and joy that will come your way.  My guess is that when you do that, you will be surrounded by support and love.  Will there be an occasional hater?  Of coarse, but you will have your support system in place and your focus on what you are doing to change the world.  You will have created a safe place and from that place of safety you will be free to create as much success as you wish.

A Christmas Gift for Your Brain

Posted on December 19, 2011 by admin

As you finish your last minute shopping and go to that final Christmas party don’t forget to give a gift to your brain!  So many of us, as the year draws to a close, use this time to reflect.  We look back at our year and most of us begin beating ourselves up for what we didn’t do.  We recount our shortcomings, look at our not- so- perfect waistline, bank account, cluttered closets… the list goes on.  Then with grim determination and  gritted teeth we make out our New Year’s Resolutions.  What joy!  I have a different suggestion…

Starting today and continuing through New Year get out  a beautiful piece of paper, journal or notebook, pick up your favorite pen and start listing your successes for the year.  Be generous and list the small as well as big accomplishments.  This is like a beautifully wrapped gift to your brain.  A part of your subconscious mind is the Reticular Activating System.  It is the filter that sifts through the information you are exposed to.  It decides if you should notice the information consciously  or not.  The RAS is an obedient servant looking into the world for anything you have said is important.  This year give it lists of successes to focus on.  As you give yourself the message that you are successful your brain will automatically (Really, this is without conscious work!  Don’t you love it?) look out into your world and find other opportunities and resources to create success.  This gives you the edge you want to reach your goals and have fun doing it.  So get started now.  It will make your Christmas merry and bright!

Who’s Afraid of Success?

Posted on December 5, 2011 by admin

Of all the fears in the world, fear of success is the fear we are most blind to. Many client’s will tell me they are afraid of failure not success. So I challenge them look at their lives, goals, dreams and the truth is, they are already failing to meet those goals. They are handling failure just fine! Most of us are not that afraid of failure, we are afraid of success. One of the top reasons for fearing success is the fear of loneliness. Think about what happens when you are the boss or manager over a group of people. No longer can you stand and gripe at the water-cooler. You have to keep your feelings more contained. You feel alone.

Studies of top performers in business and sports show that top performers enjoy being alone. They enjoy focusing inwardly. This doesn’t mean that they are antisocial it simply means they enjoy the time they have to be alone and work on their craft. Rather then focusing on loneliness they focus on how their success will attract people to them.
Take a minute to think about your vision of success. Are you afraid that when you reach your goals you won’t fit in with your family, friends or business associates anymore? Can you handle being alone for periods of time without feeling lonely? If you are seeing some mental roadblocks to reaching success then now is the time to work on them. Start finding ways to spend time alone and enjoy it. Challenge yourself to think of success as a people-attractor. Understand that while you may lose some friends who are threatened by your success you will attract many more who are motivated and inspired by your success. Now is the time to move past mediocrity and live the big, inspiring and joyful life we were meant to live!

Anxious? Blame it on Your Amygdala!

Posted on November 14, 2011 by admin

Take a moment to sit down, breath in deeply , and notice if your muscles are tight or relaxed I’m betting  you will be surprised at how much tension you hold in your body.  Many generations ago maybe all that tension kept our ancestors alive but now, for the most part, it keeps us headed towards stress- related diseases and chronic anxiety.  There is a small part of our brain called the Amygdala.  It a super- sensitive fear alarm.  In fact, in research studies where blind people were “shown” frightening images their amygdala’s registered fear even though the research subjects did not see the pictures.  You can only imagine what we pick up in our environment to activate our amygdala.  It is no wonder that most of us live in a state of at least some level of daily anxiety.

When you choose to create big dreams and plans for your life there is plenty of amygdala activating thoughts and actions to be taken.  It is easy to be scared into inaction while calling it procrastination or busyness.  That’s why it is so important to learn to calm and sooth your amygdala.  So how do you calm your amygdala?  Meditation is one of the most proven and effective ways to calm that part of your brain.  You don’t have to join a group of monks to make it work for you.  A very simple and quick meditation is to plug one side of your nose and breath in and out slowly.  Then do it on the other side.  Repeat for 5 minutes and notice how your body relaxes.  (It’s great to do during tense meetings.  Quite a conversation starter!)

Find time to meditate 5-10 minutes per day and notice how much calmer you are.  It will make it much easier to grow and stretch outside your comfort zone as you create the life of your dreams.

What You Don’t Know About Your Brain!

Posted on August 15, 2011 by admin

Makes me wonder how much more success, enjoyment and pure bliss we could experience if we just developed and used our right brain as much as we use our left. Would love to hear your comments.

Are You Holding Yourself Back?

Posted on July 11, 2011 by admin

I was rereading a page in one of my favorite books and wanted to share it with you…

I think it is easy to stop ourselves from being too bright, too happy, too successful. Conformity also soothes us. We can predict it, and there is the illusion of control. Unfortunately, we also stop ourselves from being too visible, unusual or vivid. We stop ourselves from being too loud, too different, or too much. Yet we crave our individuality, our wild, special selves. We want to live our adventures and be seen for our essences. SARK

How are you holding yourself back? Where in your life are you afraid to be too visible or too much?

Willpower Doesn’t Work!

Posted on May 9, 2011 by admin

Have you ever wondered why willpower never works? You can grit your teeth only so long before things go back to where they were. I was just reading a passage that explains why willpower doesn’t work…

The subconscious mind is where all the action takes place so whatever idea you put into the subconscious and hold to be true will manifest itself as an experience in your life. Now pay attention; your conscious mind, or conscious thought, is directive, but it is not creative. It has no power. It only expresses your desire. So the conscious mind can give only direction. The subconscious mind has the power, the energy and the action to make things happen. by Dr.Robert Anthony

When we try to push through and use willpower instead of getting the help of the subconscious then all we do is create stress and anxiety for ourselves. A much better way is to use the conscious mind to decide what you want and the subconscious mind to visualize, focus on and enjoy the creative process. So here are a few steps you can take to make sure you are using your subconscious mind to help you reach your goals…

1. Decide what you want to create.
2. Make an affirmation to say daily. (It needs to be positive and present tense.)
3. Imagine what it will be like when you reach that goal. How will you feel?
4. Believe you can reach the goal.
5. Take inspired action When you think of something you could do to get closer to your goal … Do it!
6. Enjoy the process. Relax and have fun.
