Got a Goal? Don’t Put a Date on It!

Posted on November 7, 2011 by admin

If you’re like me you have been to many goal-setting seminars where the instructor encourages you to set goals and then write a date by which you will reach those goals.  In fact I have even been one of those instructors!  The idea, of coarse, is to get you moving.  Sometimes this works but more often then not it will freeze you into abrupt and solid inaction.  Oh, perhaps you’ll take a few small  steps until you hit your first obstacle then everything else will feel more important to work on and there goes your goal.  So why does this happen?

There are at least two parts of the brain responsible for your inactivity.  When you set a big goal. Let’s say, doubling your income by the end of the year.  This goal will most definitely take you out of your comfort zone and require change and growth.  The Psycho-cybernetic mechanism which acts like a thermostat to let you know when you are out of your comfort zone kicks into high gear.  It’s letting you know that you are setting a goal that is really pushing your percieved safety. (Remember to the brain change=danger) This causes discomfort and sends an alarm to the Amygdala which is the part of your brain that senses fear.  That’s when you start believing that checking your emails or cleaning cat hair from under the dryer is way more important then your goal of doubling your revenue!  And that my friends, is why putting a date on your goal is not always such a great idea.

Now there are some goals that are well within your comfort zone.  For those goals go ahead and set a date.  It will motivate and excite you.  That is the key.  If setting a date on a goal makes you feel excited then that’s exactly what you should do.  But if setting a date on a goal makes it feel like a burden, overwhelming or downright frightening  don’t do it!  By setting a date all you will do is freeze yourself like a frightened rabbit.  Instead, write the goal and then start working with your limiting beliefs.  The reason a goal scares you, is that filed away in your subconscious, are beliefs that don’t line up with that goal.  Ask yourself, what are the downsides to this goal?  What am I afraid will happen?  Let’s go back to doubling your income.  Perhaps you feel that if you double your income your not- so- supportive family will come with their hands out.  Or maybe your friends will not be able to relate to you because you have passed them up financially.  Whatever it is,  acknowledge your limiting beliefs and start working with them.  Here are the first steps…

1.  Write down your vision and goal and a compelling reason why you want to reach it.

2.  Write some positive affirmations to retrain your brain for success.

3.  Read your vision and affirmations daily.

4.  Take action towards your goal, even if it is just a baby step.

5.  Notice what beliefs and fears come up as you take action.

6.  Don’t put a date on it until it feels good, just keep taking action.

Have an amazing Monday!

Haunting Beliefs

Posted on October 24, 2011 by admin

It’s that time of year where everywhere you turn there are graves popping up from neighbor’s lawns, ghosts flying from trees and glowing pumpkins in windows. As we observe all this delicious scariness we are unaware of the most terrifying thing of all, which lives in our heads…  our limiting beliefs.  Most of us don’t realize that they are  holding us back, causing us to self destruct but they are there, all the same.

Our subconscious mind is like a huge database storing all the beliefs we have been given and gathered from birth till now.  Most of those beliefs were stored before the age of four so they were interpreted through a young child’s eyes.  Our subconscious mind is determined to make us right according to our beliefs.  This means that if we believe we cannot or should not be wealthy then we could win hundred’s of millions of dollars in the lottery and within a few short years be back to living paycheck to paycheck.  It happens all the time.

An extreme example of beliefs leading to self destruction is the singer Amy Winehouse.  This girl with a huge talent quickly rose to stardom.  She had everything… money, fame, a career doing what she was passionate about.  So what happened?  The reports say that drugs and alcohol led to her death but I would argue that her beliefs killed her.  The alcohol was just the weapon she used to end her life.  Amy held on to a belief that for whatever reason told her she did not deserve her this huge success.   Her conscious mind was saying that it was thrilled with her success.  She had reached her goals. But that didn’t really matter because the  subconscious mind is millions of times stronger then the conscious  mind and will win every time.   This brain conflict caused her a huge amount of discomfort.  To relieve and numb the mental pain she turned to drugs and alcohol which led to her death.  Now that’s not only sad but scary.

So what about you?  Where are you sabotaging?  Is it in the area of health, wealth, relationships?  Until you change your beliefs you will never reach your goals in those areas.  You can grit your teeth, use all the willpower you have but it won’t last.  You will always live according to your beliefs. Researchers have found a part of our brain, the Psycho-Cybernetic Mechanism , that acts as a thermostat.  Its job is to keep us in our comfort zone.  Our comfort zone is dictated by our beliefs.  Can we be both comfortable and miserable?  Absolutely and all of us have experienced that at one time or another.

So what can you do about it?  How do you figure out what your limiting beliefs are?  The first step is to look at the area of your life that you feel stuck in.  Think about your vision for that part of your life.  What negative thoughts come up?  For example, a goal to be promoted to the executive level in your company may be joined by thoughts like, “I might be criticized.” “I might make a mistake.” “Maybe I’m not good enough yet.”  All of those negative voices and fears point towards beliefs  which do not support this goal.  Once you identify those beliefs you may use visualization, affirmations, meditation or work with a mindset coach to change them at a subconscious level.  You will know that you have changed your beliefs when you begin moving towards your goal with joy and confidence.  A client I was working with recently has a wonderful opportunity to become visible and influential in her company and in her industry.  All she has to do is put together video’s, articles and podcasts to share her knowledge.  She came to me wondering why she wasn’t taking action.  Every time she thought about creating a video or article she went blank.  As we worked together, she found out that she was holding on to a belief that it wasn’t safe to stand out.  She had many life experiences that proved the truth of that  belief . Right then and there she decided that she would like to change that belief to, “It is exciting and rewarding to share my knowledge and make a difference.”  We worked on shifting her belief at a subconscious level  and she begin creating and sharing her knowledge with confidence.  Such is the power of our beliefs.

Now it’s your turn.  Don’t let your beliefs spook you!  Look them right in the face and make sure they are allowing you to reach your goals with ease.  If not, then it is time to wave your magic wand and change them!

Have an amazing Monday!

The Secret to Personal Peace and Success

Posted on October 3, 2011 by admin

What would it be like if you had less anxiety in your life?  Would you be more creative?  Have more fun?  Have more success?  For most of us the answer is, “Yes.”  The problem is, many of us are in the habit of being anxious.  Our body is actually addicted to those anxiety chemicals.  How wonderful it would be to have the habit of being peaceful, joyful and calm!  You can.  Here’s how to start forming your new habit…

1.  Take time everyday to get quiet. (turn off music, cell phone, anything distracting)

2.  Think of a peaceful image.  A sunny day on a hiking trial in the woods or a beach with a comfortable chair  by the ocean.

3.  Take a deep breath and enjoy your visualization.  Relax.

4.  Do this everyday.  Change the visualization when you need to so you don’t get bored with it.

It sounds simple doesn’t it!  Here’s what is happening in your brain.  The amygdala is the part of your brain that first senses fear.   It actually senses fear before we consciously know we are afraid. Most of us have a massively over- active amygdala.  We, through our thoughts, the messages we get from the media and the worried conversations participate in, feed our amygdala fear.  By taking a few minutes to think peaceful thoughts and imagine wonderfully, calm settings we give our poor, overworked  amygdala a chance to calm down.  The beautiful thing about that is, a calm amygdala means a calm and peaceful you!

Here’s to more peace in your life.

Simple Step Designed to Change Your Life

Posted on September 25, 2011 by admin

Have you ever noticed how most of the thoughts you think daily are the same day after day?  The sad part is, that for most of us those repetitive thoughts are almost all negative. Thepathways in our brain become like super highways so it is easy to think the same thought patterns without even trying.  That’s why reprogramming your brain is so important.  One of the ways to begin to do that is by saying daily affirmations.  Take them and repeat them to yourself on the way to work, as you wake up in the morning and whenever you catch yourself in a negative thought pattern.  Will you believe all of them right away?  No!  But that’s okay, say them anyway. When you are using conscious techniques to change your thinking it takes about 90 days to make a new “thinking habit.”

Don’t be surprised if you are spending more and more of your time feeling  positive, creative and overall having more fun with life.  Pretty good results for a daily practice of affirmations!  Here are a few of my favorite ones…

“I am safe and well cared for.”

“I honor my body and I take excellent care of it.”

“Today is wonderful.  Money comes into my life in expected and unexpected ways.”

“It is safe for me to speak up for myself.”

“I let go of struggle.  I choose to let life be easy.”

Have an  amazing Monday!

The Inheritance Holding You Back

Posted on September 12, 2011 by admin

As a gift to myself, I spent this last weekend attending a workshop on self sabotage.  It was led by a wonderful British lady, Jaquie.  She begin the workshop by asking each of us what culture or heritage we came from.  My father’s side is predominantly German and my mother’s side is mostly English.

Jaquie shared how beliefs are handed down from one generation to the next and that’s why looking at our background can help us notice the beliefs which are holding us back.  As the weekend progressed one of the things I worked on was my “fear of standing out” of “being visible” or “being too much”  Part way through she said, “Are you sure you aren’t British?!” “You sound just like me!”  She said, that most British come from a long line of serfs who in order to stay safe needed to be quiet, work hard and keep under the radar.  This is passed down and now “Tada” I am the proud owner of those same beliefs.  The problem is, that in order to grow my business and contribute in the way I wish to, I have to be seen. I have to stand out.  Fortunately, we can choose to change our beliefs and create new supportive ones.  Our ancestors handed down everything they had.  The  good, bad and ugly.  Just as we hope our children will take what we give them and create an even better life for themselves, our ancestors hope the same for us. (or should!)

Take a moment to think about your background.  What beliefs were you handed at birth and beyond?  Are any holding you back and causing you to sabotage?  Write down the beliefs you wish to change.  What do you want to change them to?  By changing your beliefs you will change your life.  It truly is the key to living life with less struggle and more fun!

Have an amazing Monday!

How to Harness the Power of Your Subconscious Mind

Posted on August 29, 2011 by admin

It is a perfect day on the beach.  The soft breeze caresses me as I walk slowly  beside the turquoise, blue  ocean.  I smile as I think about the  sailing excursion we have planned for the afternoon…

And that my friends, is the beginning of my chapter describing the vacation I wish to take this year.  So how am I harnessing the power  of  my subconscious by writing my own “novel”?! An important part of the brain is the Reticular Activating System. (RAS) We use it all the time.  Think back to when you were looking for your next car.  Perhaps you had decided to get a bright, green VW bug.  All of a sudden numerous times a day you saw green VW’s  They were everywhere!   By making the decision to get a particular kind of car you gave the message to your RAS  that green VW bugs were very important to you.  So now you saw every VW on the road plus ads for VW sales, VW accessories etc…

To use the power of your subconscious to reach your goals you must use your RAS.  Your subconscious mind works best with pictures so by writing a story, full of details, describing what you want in each area of your life you are giving your RAS  the message, “This is important watch for opportunities to get this.”  If you used only your conscious mind to reach your goals you would have to consciously think about your goals all day long.  When you use your subconscious it works on finding opportunities even when you are not consciously thinking about your goals.  Just like with your VW purchase, you didn’t have to consciously think about VW’s to notice them on the road all day.

Harness the power of your subconscious  by taking the time to write a description of what you want in each area of your life.  Write it as if it was happening right now.  Don’t worry if you don’t believe your own story.  Give your RAS something to look for and watch the magic happen.

Have an amazing Monday!

Makes me wonder how much more success, enjoyment and pure bliss we could experience if we just developed and used our right brain as much as we use our left. Would love to hear your comments.
