<p>If you follow sports news at all then you definitely heard about Tiger Wood&#8217;s performance or lack of it.  As I watched him get worse  each day, losing his temper and finally ending the competition in defeat it was quite obvious to me that Tiger was losing his mental game.  Now although I don&#8217;t know exactly what he was thinking I can guess and I bet you can guess too.  Why?  Because all of us experience that downward spiral at times in our lives.  We make a mistake, beat ourselves up, begin over thinking every step we take.  It really is a recipe for disaster.</p>
<p>When our brains are calm but focused we are amazing problem solving, creative and resourceful people.  But when we are under high levels of stress and anxiety, when we start making what we have practiced so many times conscious instead of subconscious by second guessing ourselves, that&#8217;s when we crash and burn.</p>
<p>So whether you are working on improving your golf game or facing a challenge at work it all works the same.  We are using the same brain!  It doesn&#8217;t have to end badly .  The first step is to calm your Amygdala.  Your Amygdala is the emotion center of the brain and the emotion that gets priority is fear.  Now you may say that you aren&#8217;t afraid you&#8217;re mad or embarrassed or disgusted.  The fact is that anxiety or fear often shows up as anger, embarrassment or disgust.  To get back to your creative, resourceful smart self you must calm your Amygdala.  When your Amygdala is over stimulated all your brain&#8217;s energy is going to that part of your brain leaving the prefrontal cortex (problem solving part of the brain) with very little energy to work with.  So here are some quick ways to calm your Amygdala&#8230; Stop and pay attention to your breathing, stretch, yawn.  Take time for daily meditation.  Learn a technique like the Emotional Freedom Technique which quickly lowers anxiety.</p>
<p>Pay attention to the beliefs that come up when you are under stress&#8230; &#8220;I&#8217;ll never be able to do this.&#8221; &#8220;I&#8217;m making a fool of myself.&#8221;  &#8220;Everybody can see I don&#8217;t know what I am doing.&#8221;  or the ever so  &#8220;helpful&#8221; &#8221; I&#8217;m such an idiot!&#8221;  It&#8217;s those beliefs that will cause you to completely lose focus and shut the creative part of your brain down.  The first step is to acknowledge you have those beliefs and face them.  Then you can take steps to rewire your brain to have more supportive anxiety-lowering beliefs.</p>
<p>As top performers we are going to be faced with challenges.  We are going to stretch and push ourselves.  The key to doing that successfully is to learn how to work with that marvelous part of us&#8230; our brains.  Start today by taking time to calm your Amygdala and by choose powerful positive thoughts.</p>

<p>What are you thinking about most of the time?  Researchers show that we tend to think the same thoughts over and over, day after day.  For most of us those repetitive thoughts are not very positive or uplifting!  One way to start changing our lives and thoughts  is through daily repeating of affirmations.  Here are some of my favorite ones from Tony Robbins&#8230;</p>
<p><strong><em>I love my life.  I am so blessed.</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>All that is mine reaches me in great avalanches of abundance.</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em>At last, at last the past is past.  I&#8217;ve broken free and won!  Now is the time to love myself and really have some fun!</em></strong></p>
<p>Repeating these every morning is a fantastic way to start the day and fill your brain with what you want.  Remember we get what we focus on so take control of your focus by choosing what you think.</p>

<p>Picture this&#8230; You&#8217;re working on a project and you realize you have made a big mistake.  Shh&#8230; listen to your mind chatter.  What are you saying to yourself?  &#8220;I&#8217;m such an idiot!&#8221;  &#8221; What was I thinking?  You weren&#8217;t you moron!&#8221;  &#8220;Now they&#8217;ll know that you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing stupid!&#8221;</p>
<p>You would never dream of talking to others that way but as you hear those voices you realize that they sound very  familiar.  So why are we so mean to ourselves?  The messages you are hearing are old, most likely those neuropathways were created before you were six years of age  .  Since then odds are you have run that mental pattern numerous times.  The problem is&#8230; When you are talking that way to yourself it is activating your Amygdala (fear center) which shuts down the prefrontal cortex (the problem-solving and reasoning part of your brain)  Fixing that mistake is going to be much harder now!  So what do you do?  Here are a few steps to form new neuropathways which will be much kinder and way more conducive to effective problem solving.</p>
<p>Step 1:  Let your brain know that you want to hear that negative mental chatter when it is activated.  Often the chatter is mostly subconscious.</p>
<p>Step 2:  When you hear your mean and nasty self talk &#8211; stop.  Think what the opposite message would be.  So instead of &#8220;You are such an idiot.&#8221; you can say &#8220;You are a genius!&#8221; (I can hear your sarcastic tone of voice!)  Be nice!</p>
<p>Step 3:  Do this anytime you speak unkindly to yourself.  You will be building new positive neuropathways.</p>
<p>Step 4:  Be patient.  It takes time to build new pathways but if you are persistent soon you will hear a much kinder, gentler you.</p>

<p>You have worked hard, honed your leadership skills and now you are in front.  The eyes of your company are on you, looking to you for vision and direction.  How exciting!  Not so much. My guess is that your brain is often going to the place of , &#8220;Oh, crap!&#8221;  Let&#8217;s face it, it is tough being the leader.  There is a disorientation that leaders experience when there is no one but themselves to follow.  On top of that, you feel the responsibility to lead your people and company in a direction of growth and strength.  What if you mess up?  All those people are looking to you to make the right decisions and have the vision.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s no wonder that so many leaders sabotage.  One minute they are brilliant and confident and the next they seem confused and lost.  What can you do as a leader to avoid the disorientation that comes from being in front?  The first step is to trust the vision, skills and intuition that got you there in the first place.  Understand that your subconscious mind processes huge amounts of information before your conscious mind even realizes it.  Scientists call this preemptive perception.  This is why so often your first hunch is right.    Take regular time to sit quietly and think about your vision.  Learn to trust your own guiding light.  The next step is to find other leaders that you feel safe with and meet with them regularly to discuss ideas, issues and to just have fun.  The third step is to hire a Coach.  Someone who will notice when you begin to sabotage, call you on it and help you shift your limiting beliefs to more supportive ones.  Someone who will remind you to trust your inner guidance.</p>
<p>The beauty and pain of being the leader is that it requires personal growth.  It requires a new level of trust in yourself.  What an opportunity!  Embrace it, get the support you deserve and make the positive impact you&#8217;ve been dreaming of.</p>

<p>Do you every go through your day feeling scattered and indecisive?  This is the feeling you get when your amygdala, the fight or flight center of your brain is over stimulated.  It makes it very hard to problem-solve and be creative.  I was just listening to Mark Waldmen, a professor and brain-training expert.  He had a very simple exercise to do daily for a month.  I&#8217;m going to try it out and thought you might want to as well.  The purpose of this exercise is to get the mind focused on what is important and to come from a place of  purpose rather then fear.  Here it is&#8230;</p>
<p>Step 1:  For 30 seconds&#8230;  Yawn, stretch, tighten and relax your muscles. (This is my favorite part.  It feels so good!)</p>
<p>Step 2:  Ask yourself this question&#8230; What is my deepest inner most value?  Write it down and live from that value today.</p>
<p>Step 3:  Ask yourself&#8230; What is my deepest business value?  Write it down and let it guide you today.</p>
<p>Do this everyday for 3o days and share with me your insights!  I&#8217;ll let you know my experience as well.</p>

<p>Are you experiencing lack of confidence, energy and personal peace? Are you stressed? Here’s a possibility why… Each part of your brain – indeed, each neuronal cell – has a mind of its own. And each area can operate as a unique entity, like individuals going about their own business, oblivious to what is going on in the other parts of the brain. When this is happening – and it happens quite often – your brain is not functioning at its fullest potential and will result in the above mentioned symptoms.</p>
<p>But imagine if these same brain areas start communicating with one another in a state of deep cooperation and enthusiasm. We can train our brains to do this, and when we do, we can accomplish astonishing feats with extraordinary ease and speed. This is coherence.</p>
<p>Researchers at Graz University of Technology and the University of Vienna in Austria recently found that brain coherence may play a vital role in optimal brain communication and enhanced reasoning. Other scientific research has associated coherence with exceptionally high degrees of clear or “pure” thinking.</p>
<p>This evidence suggests that coherence is a key that allows us to move effortlessly into peak states of performance and become fully absorbed in the creative flow of the activity in which we are engaged. We can do this in sports, and we can do this in every business venture we create.</p>
<p>Here’s an outer example of the power of coherence. .When, in 1850 in France, 483 soldiers marched across the Angers bridge in perfect harmony with one another, the entire bridge collapsed. The simultaneous rise and fall of the soldiers’ feet were so highly coordinated and coherent that the energy they generated literally vibrated the bridge’s suspension system until it came apart.</p>
<p>The same thing happens when you generate coherence in your brain. Old habits and useless behaviors – those ancient rusty screws that were needed to hold together the frail reality of a child’s mind – fall apart. And in that supremely creative moment where everything inside is working in perfect harmony, you’ll become more effective and successful at virtually anything you choose to do. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi called this optimal state of performance “flow,” and brain scan studies have shown that it’s a neurological process that anyone can achieve.</p>
<p><strong>Symptoms of decreased brain coherence</strong>:</p>
<p>Lack of organization</p>
<p>Mental and emotional inflexibility</p>
<p>Lack of personal peace</p>
<p>Lack of confidence</p>
<p>Lack of energy</p>
<p>Mental fog</p>
<p>Increased stress</p>
<p><strong>Symptoms of increased brain coherence:</strong></p>
<p>Peak performance</p>
<p>Clear thinking</p>
<p>Increased creativity</p>
<p>Reduced stress</p>
<p>Emotional flexibility</p>
<p>Increased happiness and well being</p>
<p>The key to becoming more effective and making your brain more coherent is simple: train your mind – on a daily basis – to focus on what you truly love, desire, and value, and you will transform your life as well as your brain. All you need to do is make a conscious decision to do so, and commit yourself 100% to carrying that decision out. And if you write down a step-by-step detailed strategy, a new research study shows that you increase your chances of success by 50%.</p>

<p>Shelly was interviewing for a senior management position.  She was thrilled with the job description, excited about the pay, benefits and opportunities, and best of all the company really wanted her.  But as she walked through the halls to her third interview she couldn&#8217;t help but notice a sense of &#8220;fear&#8221; or &#8220;threat.&#8221;  It just didn&#8217;t feel right.  Rather then talk herself out of her intuition Shelly trusted it and turned down the job.  A few months later the company fell apart and had to go through major restructuring that would have left her as a new hire, jobless.</p>
<p>Can you trust your intuition?  The subject of intuition has always been shrouded in mystery, a bit woo-woo.  We want to rely on facts not feelings.  But is intuition often embedded in subconscious fact?  Neuroscientists think that it may be.  One of the reasons we get a hunch or feeling is that our subconscious mind which is a whole lot faster then our conscious mind picks up patterns based on past experiences, pieces them together and makes a preemptive plan before it ever hits your conscious mind.  You register it as a gut feeling with very little you can consciously prove.  The truth is though, your intuition is often as or more accurate then your conscious thinking.</p>
<p>My challenge to you is to begin to listen to your intuition. Honor it and learn to trust it.  It takes guts to do it, especially at first but the payoffs are huge!  I would love to hear your experiences as you learn to trust your intuition.  Feel free to come back and comment!</p>

<p>As the sad story of Whitney Houston&#8217;s death flooded the news this weekend it made me think.  What would make a mega star, someone who appeared to have it all, a woman who loved music and felt so blessed to have the gift of that amazing voice, sabotage in such an extreme way?  Why would she hide in a fog of drugs and alcohol?  While I can only guess, as I don&#8217;t really know her, I imagine it was some of the same beliefs and fears that you and I face when we reach for success.</p>
<p>One of the most common fears people face when experiencing success is the fear of becoming a target.  The truth is when we become leaders or stand out for our accomplishments some people do criticize.  During the height of Whitney&#8217;s career she was criticized for being a &#8220;goodie-goodie&#8221;, too perfect, a diva&#8230;  Her every move was followed and talked about.  So yes, success and fame can make you the target. The truth also is that success draws support and  love.  However, your brain naturally focuses on the criticism.  It&#8217;s a survival mechanism.  Think back to your last work review.  Your boss can say all sorts of positive things but if he/she mentions one area that needs improvement that&#8217;s what you focus on. Right?</p>
<p>The question then is, &#8220;How do we work with our brain to not just survive but thrive during success?&#8221;  The first step is to watch what we focus on.  By focusing on the fear of being the victim we tend to draw people to us that will attack us.  It&#8217;s just how it works.  So the way to avoid this is to begin focusing on people who support us.  Focus on how, with your success you can help others and the feeling of accomplishment and joy that will come your way.  My guess is that when you do that, you will be surrounded by support and love.  Will there be an occasional hater?  Of coarse, but you will have your support system in place and your focus on what you are doing to change the world.  You will have created a safe place and from that place of safety you will be free to create as much success as you wish.</p>
